After leading the nation in points per game over the first 2 ½ months of the season, the Panthers have struggled to put points on the board over their last seven games.
"It's not necessarily a concern," senior forward Gilbert Brown said. "We've just had some missed opportunities. That's just how the Big East is. We've been playing against these teams year after year. The scout is very detailed on each team. We know exactly what each team does as well as what they know about us. I think it makes for a tougher game. You really have to rely on your half-court offense and defense to win games."
Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon echoed Brown's sentiments.
"Once you get into the league it always happens," Dixon said. "The aberrations are the ones that stay high scoring. It's familiarity. It's the level of play. In some regards, it's style of play. You're playing against better defenses."
The Panthers have been slowed by match-up zone defenses the past two games.
St. John's upset No. 4 Pitt 60-59 on Saturday for yet another win against an elite team.
The latest impressive win has the Red Storm thinking they might be ranked in the Top 25.
"I can't wait," Justin Burrell said of the Red Storm moving into the top 25. "It's been a long four years without that number. We deserve to see that number."
It's actually been just over a decade since St. John's was in The Associated Press poll.
Dwight Hardy's underhanded flip with 1.2 seconds left Saturday gave the Red Storm the victory, their fifth this season over a team that spent time in the top 10.
No. 4 Pittsburgh defeated No. 9 Villanova 57-54 on Saturday night.
The Wildcats hadn't lost at The Pavilion since Jan. 6, 2007.
Antonio Pena tried to win it for Villanova in the final minute. He hit a three-pointer with 58 seconds left to make it a three-point game, then forced a turnover on Pitt's possession.
Dominic Cheek missed a tying three-point attempt and the offensive rebound was kicked out to Maalik Wayns. His shot swished through the net -- a tick after the final buzzer.

No. 4 Pittsburgh rallied to avoid an upset at the hands of No. 25 West Virginia on Monday night.
The Panthers won 71-66 thanks to a seven-point edge in the second half at the WVU Coliseum.
Pittsburgh shot 61% from the field in the second half, while grabbing 18 offensive rebounds.
"We really focused on rebounding," coach Jamie Dixon said. "We cut down their offensive rebounds. We won with our rebounding and defense, and that's what we set out to do."
Pittsburgh junior guard Ashton Gibbs suffered an MCL injury in his left knee and will be out 10-14 days.
Gibbs is coming off his best game of the season, scoring 25 points in a 71-59 win over Cincinnati on Saturday.
Panthers spokesperson Greg Hotchkiss said "wear and tear" on the knee caused the injury. Gibbs will wear a brace that will allow the injury to heal and avoid surgery or further injury to the knee.
